U15s Cruely denied in sudden death penalty shootout

St Josephs U15s played the game of the season against strong favourites Burren Celtic in the Quater final of the cup at McArdles cross this morning.

From the off Josephs put it up to the Ballon side , closing them down at every oppotunity and passing the ball with skill and confidence. Both Keepers were in fine form  making some fine saves to keep the game level at half time.

Second half started with Josephs on the front foot and it paid off when Jordei Colemans skill produced an excellent goal on 50minutes .Burren Celtic were stunned and Josephs continued to press for the second with Cormac Kelly going close and Ciaran Murphy hitting the post.

The game looked to be petering out when Ryan Hollick unleashed a wonderful left foot strike for Burren Celtic which found its way into the Josephs net. Extra time was needed to decide it.

Within two minutes Burren were ahead when what looked like a tame shot took a wicked bounce and deceived Kelan Gaffney and bobbled into the net . Josephs now had to dig deep ,with Burren putting 11 men behind the ball ,but in the final minute of extra time up stepped Samir Abibo to level it for Josephs …..Penalties

The nerves were jangling as both Kelan Gaffney & Jim Nolan  made wonderful saves to add to the excitement . With 5 kicks a piece it was level at 3-3 .Sudden death was needed and it was on the 14th spot spot kick Burren Celtic won it 4-3.

Heartbreak for Josephs but a wonderful advertisement as to how the game should be played .

Well done to all on a great game of football and a special thanks to Coaches Padraig McNally , John Kelly and Bernard Mullins for all time and effort  throughout the year .

U12’s finish the league against the Champions

On a cold wet and windy day Josephs finished off their league by hosting champions New Oak Boys  Red. Josephs started slow and allowed New Oak to dominate the early game but slowly worked their way into the match. Defensive work from Jack Murphy allowed Cormac O’Brien to push forward from midfield. New Oak scored after strong pressure meaning Josephs had to chase the game. In the second half Josephs pushed but again got caught and gave away a couple of quick goals.Best for Josephs were
Daniel Donegan, Sinead Hayden, Brian McGrath  and Sam Byrne.

U13 St Josephs 2 – 1 Vale

This was a very entertaining game played in beautiful conditions. St Josephs put alot of pressure on early in the first and were rewarded when a through ball from Dinny Farrell found Thomas Sheehan who rounded the defender and finished nicely with his left foot. The second half saw the game ebb and flow and with ten minutes to go Vale scored the equalisier. Joey’s kept pressing for the winner and with a minute to go they were awarded a corner which saw Farrell float the ball straight into the net to give St Josephs the three points. This was another good team preformance from Joey’s with defenders Jack Holmes and Pauric Murray clearing their lines well.

St. Joseph U12s win away to New Oak

On a lovely sunny day in New Oak, the U12s put on an impressive display of soccer. From the whistle Joeys started the stronger team and kept the pressure on the New Oak defence for the whole 60 mins. Joeys 1st goal came from an indirect free kick by Pavel Cahill to Cormac O’Brien who found the back of the net. Joeys quickly followed with a second from Midfielder Paddy Regan . Leaving it 2-0 at half time. With the 2nd half under way, Joeys continued to dominate and this resulted in a 3rd goal from Sinead Hayden. New Oak responded with a goal. But Joeys didn’t let their heads drop and Daniel Nolan smashed one to the back of the net. One couldn’t complete this report without mentioning the sterling efforts of our back four of Jack Murphy, Daniel Donegan, Brian McGrath and Pavel Cahill and keeper Evan McGuire. Great play from Arnas Karalius, Daniel Giedraitis, Sam Byrne and Kalum Pawley. Game finished 2-4.

Blackpool 2013

Last Monday saw the return of our two teams U15’s and U12’s who competed in the Blackpool 2013 Cup. We left early on Friday morning with a group of 30 players and 18 Adults and from that moment till our return on Monday  the behaviour of all involved was something for the club to be proud of. The U15’s had 3 games on Saturday where the won 1 and lost 2, they progressed on to the play offs on Sunday where they played another two games. The U12’s had two games on Saturday and two on Sunday where they drew 1 and lost 3. A lot of experience was garnered by all players with them playing teams from Ireland, UK, Belgium and The Netherlands.

With the football over it was time to enjoy the social aspect with parents and managers from the two teams getting to know one another. Who knew we had such talented Comedians, Singers, Instrumentalists and Mime Artists in the Club!! Everyone would agree it was a very successful and enjoyable trip.

All 48 would like to say a special Thank You to David Larkin for all his hard work, the only one of the organisers who didn’t get to enjoy the trip.

U12s unlucky against Vale after returning from Blackpool Cup

Playing against a strong wind Josephs conceded an early goal. Fighting back hard Josephs tried to get into the game with strong midfield work from Patrick Regan and Daniel Giedraitis on the wing, but Vale scored a second with an excellent free kick. In the second half Josephs produced a much better display and good play from Cormac O’Brien ended with him finishing superbly to bring Josephs back into the game. With Sam Byrne and Sinead Hayden leading the push for an equalizer and solid defending from Pavel Cahill they were unlucky to concede again. A good display from Josephs, with Daniel Nolan, Brian Fitzgerald and Daniel Donegan playing well.

Final score 1-3 to Vale.

U13 Nurney 2 V St Josephs 0

This was a great match with St Josephs very unlucky to come away with nothing.Joey’s had most of the possession in the first half but Nurney went two nil up very much against the run of play. Late in the second half Harry Taylor hit a screamer which caught the under-side of the bar and bounced down, but it was ruled that the ball did not cross the line. Minutes later he hit a free-kick which hit the cross-bar and went over. The second half saw St Josephs pile on the pressure but could not get the break they needed. Missing a few regulars this was a great team preformance by Joey’s who all played well, with Cormac O’Brien and Pavel Cahill stepping up to the mark with great play.
